Chile is one of the most developed countries in South America with a large gay scene in the capital city of Santiago. We travelled from the Northern tip of this long thin country in the San Pedro desert all the way to Torres del Paine in the South.
These are our 5 favourite gay friendly hotels in Chile we tried along the way, which we loved and felt completely welcomed as a gay couple.
#1 Alto Atacama: San Pedro de Atacama
Alto Atacama is the gay friendly place you need to base yourself in San Pedro. As well as being extremely welcoming to LGBT travellers, it’s a luxurious, exclusive resort with the backdrop of the Salt Mountain Range.
It offers full board packages with guided tours tailored to each guest. It’s the best way to discover the landscapes around San Pedro, which rank as some our favourite computer screen backgrounds.
Meals at Alto Atacama are delicious and unique, with gems like ostrich carpaccio with raspberries. They also make delicious Pisco Sours, which is even more heavenly when enjoyed at one of their outdoor plunge pools. To find out more, read our about our stay at this gay friendly hotel in San Pedro.

#2 Luciano K: Santiago
Luciano K is a classy gay friendly boutique hotel located in the bohemian Lastarria neighbourhood in central Santiago, close to the gay bars of Bellavista.
The building was originally a 1920s apartment block, which was refurbished by Chilean architect Luciano Kulczewski who also designed the city’s Teleferico.
It has a modern art deco style with many of its original features in place such as the tessellated tile floors, marble staircase and a grill-gated elevator, the oldest in the city in fact.
We loved hanging out at Luciano K’s rooftop bar which also has an outdoor pool. We noticed it was popular with gay locals who come here for a few cocktails before heading out to Bellavista.

#3 The Aubrey: Santiago
The Aubrey is Santiago’s first boutique hotel. It’s bloody gorgeous! It is located in the Bellavista neighbourhood next to Pablo Neruda’s house La Chascona and was originally owned by politician Domingo Doran until converted to a hotel between 2005-2010.
From the outside it almost resembles a fairytale castle. Once inside you appreciate the care and intricate detail that has gone into the refurbishment project undertaken by the owners Mark and Will. It’s stylish, classy, with a modern touch but keeping a lot of the original features like the stair cases and wood beams in the ceilings.
The Aubrey has its own outdoor heated pool and offers complimentary Afternoon Tea for guests. It also has a sun terrace and sexy Piano Lounge bar where they make delicious Pisco Sour cocktails. In terms of welcoming LGBT travellers, the Aubrey couldn’t be more gay friendly. It’s gay owned and some of the staff are also gay – look out for the very cute Jason at reception!

#4 Verso Hotel: Valparaiso
Valparaiso is the cool arty cultural capital of Chile and a fun place to come either as day trip from Santiago or for the weekend. Verso Hotel is an excellent gay friendly base in the city, located a few blocks away from Pablo Neruda’s house in the Cerro Florida neighbourhood.
It has a poetry theme running through it, with each room dedicated to a famous writer, featuring his lyrics on the walls. Ours was Nicaraguan poet, Ruben Dario, with his famous poem Invernal written on the wall.
We loved the rooftop bar and restaurant at Verso. It has a 360 degrees view across the city, making it the perfect spot to watch the sunset with cocktail to hand. As a bonus, they have 2 hot tubs here which you can book all to yourself and enjoy it with your lover.

#5 Chile Patagonia Camp: Torres del Paine
Torres del Paine is on everyone’s bucket list when visiting Patagonia. If it’s not, it should be! This is trekking heaven with some of the most incredible landscapes you’ll ever see. Most will be camping whilst doing the W Circuit. However, if like us you don’t want to sleep in a tent, check out Chile Patagonia Camp.
At Chile Patagonia Camp, you don’t stay in tents but in luxurious yurts which have private bathrooms, king sized beds and even central heating.
They offer guests daily guided tours to the famous National Park, which includes highlights from the W Circuit. Our favourite is the 8 hours trek to the iconic Paine Towers. This is not only the money shot of Torres del Paine, but also a romantic packed lunch spot as you admire the reflection of the towers in the glacier lake in front of it.
The daily rate per person for a 3 nights all-inclusive package is $463/£362 during low season (1 September-31 October and 1-30 April) and $633/£495 in high season (1 November to 31 March).
