Italy is a hotbed for some of the finest men in the world who just love to bare it all at one of the country’s many gorgeous beaches.
After checking out the best gay beaches in Europe, we wanted to discover more from the Italian perspective, so we teamed up with the guys at GayFriendlyItaly.com to showcase the 5 best gay nude beaches in Italy.
One thing to note with regards to public nudity in Italy is that although it is officially illegal, in 2006 nude tanning was legalised in designated areas so you should be fine in the places we list below.
Lecciona beach in Tuscany
Lecciona beach is the most popular gay beach in Italy. It is part of the natural park of Migliarino, San Rossore and Massaciuccoli.
The beach is stunning. We love it because not only is it a sandy beach (most tend to be pebbly or rocky), but it is surrounded by a gorgeous pine forest. This also makes it quite private, hence why it’s a popular spot for nudists.
Bear in mind there are no establishments here. To reach it you have to walk at least 10-15 minutes through the pinewood and sand dunes, so bring all your food, water etc with you.
Il Buco beach in the Capocotta Nature Reserve
Il Buco means “the hole” in Italian and is a popular gay beach located south of the Lido di Ostia in an official nature reserve. Although it’s slightly off the beaten track, you can visit it as part of a day trip from Rome on a short train ride followed by a local bus ride.
It’s very remote so with few facilities, so remember to bring all the amenities you may need for the day. But this means there is a lot of privacy, making it popular for nudism. The official nudist section covers around 250m. We also like Il Buco because it attracts a slightly younger gay crowd than most gay beaches in Italy.
Mako beach near Gallipoli in Lecce
Gallipoli is a popular Italian summer gay destination in the southeastern province of Lecce. Mako is a hidden gay beach located just outside the city, but the place where the local gay boys of the region hang out.
The beach is quite rocky and more popular for its rugged beauty. The gay area is by a wooden deck and attracts everyone of all shapes and sizes: you don’t need a ripped Adonis-like body to come here. As such the atmosphere is extremely open minded, friendly with zero attitude.
Mari Pintau on Sardinia island
Mari Pintau means “painted sea” in Italian and is one of the most popular beaches on Sardinia island. It is half way between the picturesque town of Cagliari and Villasimius, located next to the Kala and Moru beaches.
Mari Pintau is extremely gay friendly, particularly around the nudist area, on the far right. Although it’s a rocky beach, the water is heavenly – totally transparent. It is enclosed in a large gulf that sprawls out for around 2.5 miles, making it ideal for swimming in the morning and for tanning all afternoon hours. Another added bonus is that it is southwest facing, so has stunning sunsets every single evening.
Costa dei Barbari near Trieste
Costa Dei Barbari (meaning “Barbary Coast”) is a popular scenic nudist beach in the Friuli Venezia Giulia province in Northeast Italy, around 6 miles (10km) from Trieste city, near the towns of Sistiana and Duino.
Barbari is quite a narrow beach with white cobbles and pebbles. It’s also very picturesque, completely surrounded by nature and often cited as one of the Top 15 Beaches In Italy.
Costa Dei Barberi is also the main gay beach in this northern region of Italy so frequently receives visiting gays from nearby Slovenia, Austria and Croatia. To see more of Costa dei Barbari, watch this very cute YouTube video about it.
